Troop 35 Summer Camp updates:

Well, on 06/26/10, the Troop got back from summer camp at Camp Orr High Adventure Base on the beautiful Buffalo River in the Ozarks. We took 11 youth and three adults.
Climbing Program:
We had two of the older youth participate the the High Adventure Climbing Program. Being in the Ozark Mountains, makes a natural setting for some great rock climbing, with one day climbing off the camp property at Horseshoe Canyon Climbing Ranch. Later that day, those youth went to town for some local cuisine in Jasper Arkansas.
First Year Program:
The Buffalo Trail program is the first year program that focused on scout skills. The staff was very enthusiastic and helpful. They were able to work on merit badges in the afternoon.
Merit Badge Program:
The rest of the boys worked on merit badges.
Opening Campfire, Hollerin' Hollow, and closing campfire:
The campfire programs were a lot of fun and a great OA callout at closing. Hollerin' Hollow was Hillbilly Hoe Down, and was great. All skits and songs performed were by the camp staff. You can really tell that this was the night for the staff to let their hair down.
Camp Food:
Mostly typical camp food except for the scoutmaster luncheon with steaks and all the fixin's.
Althought, it seemed that everyone had adequate portions, the older boys were rarely offered seconds.
We also made cobbler from fresh picked mountain raspberries that the boys were picking daily and we made fresh root beer.

Troop Information

Troop meetings are 7:00pm every Monday at our Scout Hut located at 210 W Broadway, just 3 blocks west of New Hope Rd in Kennedale. Traditionally a small hometown troop, Troop 35's first Eagle Scout was in 1923 and several other Eagle Scouts in the thirties, forties, and fifties. We have Eagle Scouts from every decade since 1920.
Though records are not clear and some years not consectutive, the troop has been chartered since 1920's making Troop 35 in the neighborhood of 88 years old and one of the oldest troops in the Longhorn Council. Troop 35 along with Pack 35 have met in the old Scouthut since 1961. Pack 35 has been chartered by the 1st United Methodist Church of Kennedale since 1961.

Troop 35 is a very active Troop and is boy-led (meaning the boys plan and carry out the program with the assistance and guideance of the Scoutmaster Corp and Troop Committee).

Enjoy a 12 month program and an outing each and every month. We are constantly searching for new camps and activities.

The troop was awarded a Philmont Trek and went to summer camp at Worth Ranch for 2009. Summer camp for 2010 will be at Camp Orr in northeastern Arkansas, located on the Buffalo National River running through the Ozark Mountains.

Sustanability:
The troop recently outfitted the troop trailer with dual axles in order to reduce maintainence costs and increase the tire wear and reliability. The trailer tongue was also reinforced and dual spare tire racks installed. These changes will give the trailer many years of continious service. The old chuck boxes were retired and new chuckboxes have been custom built to fit the trailers internal configuration. The Scout Hut has a computor system and new wood tables for training, meetings, or banquets.
